Preservation Massachusetts (PM) is the statewide non-profit historic preservation organization dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth’s historic and cultural heritage. It was established in 1989 and is supported entirely by members and concerned citizens. In keeping with its original mission, the organization works in partnership with national, state and local preservation organizations and individuals across the Commonwealth.

Preservation Massachusetts:

  • Educates – We develop programming and resources that are accessible to the wide variety of our supporters. To support Historic Districts and Commissions, PM manages a traveling workshop series—Preservation 101, 201, and 301.  For individuals and organizations, PM also sponsors the annual Preserve Mass Barns Conference. PM also publishes a quarterly newsletter. Finally, PM maintains a directory of Massachusetts-based preservation professionals and other resources on our website.

  • Advocates – Through our Massachusetts’ Most Endangered Historic Resources Program, we support groups of concerned citizens who have sought to protect neglected or threatened resources in their communities. Our professional full-time staff handles numerous individual advocacy calls daily.

  • Promotes – We shepherded passage of the Massachusetts Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit in 2003 and continue to achieve success on this issue—most recently, with the $50 million cap increase in July 2006. We also lobby for important preservation tools, such as Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund.

  • Partners – We have also forged partnerships with the development, real estate, and business community, in an effort to further the impact and future of preservation in Massachusetts. By forming the Massachusetts Preservation Coalition in 2002, we found benefit in a preservation community that speaks with one strong voice.

Preservation Massachusetts is a 501(c)(3) organization and we are supported entirely by the generosity of our Membership and the success of our annual events. Your support allows us to continue to grow and make Preservation Massachusetts a viable, strong, and effective organization.
